Indy's Choice - The Friendly Persuasion

To whet your reading appetite for this funny and thought-provoking book, you can’t do much better than read these reviews submitted by Indianapolis residents:

This is a story about an Indiana Quaker family facing war, challenging their religious beliefs, the temptations they face and their reactions, and the strength they find in themselves, their family and their community in times of crisis. The time frame is before the Civil War – but it could be today in reference to the times of strife and challenges we all face currently and where we find our inner strength.
-Sheila Pratt

A great read filled with Hoosier values. Adapted into a beautiful Oscar nominated film by William Wyler, staring Gary Cooper, Dorothy McGuire and a very young Anthony Perkins. While the film shows a decidedly Hollywood interpretation, the rich cinematography, fine acting, and haunting Dimitri Tiomkin score make the story oh so memorable. One of my favorite works of fiction for it's accessible prose yet deep and heart warming message.
-Mike Williams

Since its original publication in 1946, The Friendly Persuasion has won millions of admirers, both critics and general readers alike, and to this day remains in print, a testament to its enduring qualities.

Stolen Hours
Summary: With this film, Susan Hayward joins Bette Davis and Tallulah Bankhead as part of a most select triad of leading ladies. Stolen hours, originally titled Dark Victory, starred Bankhead on Broadway, Davis in the 1939 rendering, and Hayward in this version. Hayward portrays Laura Pember, a rich Texas playgirl living in England. Aimless and idle, she passes the time with parties and diversions of the country gentry. She finally meets a young Welsh doctor, John Carmody (British leading man Michael Craig), who sees the despair beneath her insouciance--and the illness she's trying to ignore.screenplay by Jessamyn West.
