One Book, One City - Indy's Choice, Volume 5

Announcement Volume 4

December 16, 2006

We are pleased to present CATCH ME IF YOU CAN by Frank Abagnale and co-author Stan Redding to the Indianapolis community as One Book, One City - Indy’s Choice 2005-2006.

This year’s theme is "What if all of Indianapolis read a book that is a real page-turner?" Indianapolis residents suggested more than 270 book titles and added many thoughtful and passionate reviews.

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN is an irresistible page-turner about the legendary "Skywayman" Frank Abagnale, whose story later became the basis for Steven Spielberg’s 2004 box office hit starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks.

Between the ages of 16 and 21, Frank W. Abagnale was one of the most daring con men, forgers, imposters and escape artists in history. His only weapon was his wit. Armed with an I.Q. of 136 and a 10th grade education, he charmed his way through a five-year life-on-the-lam. Abagnale was known by police in 26 countries and all 50 states, even as he assumed four aliases. Masquerading as a Pan Am pilot, hospital supervising resident, lawyer and sociology professor, he lived a sumptuous life while cashing over $2.5 million in forged checks.

Eventually caught, Abagnale now considers his past immoral, unethical and illegal. He is proud to have been able to turn his life around. Following five years in French, Swedish and U. S. prisons, Abagnale was released on the condition that he help the government write fraud prevention programs. For the last 25 years, he has taught at the F.B.I. Academy and traveled the lecture circuit with his story. On his own initiative, Abagnale has repaid all fraudulently obtained funds with interest.

We hope that this best-selling true tale of the world’s most sought-after con man will spark your interest and encourage you to discuss the currency of its societal issues: ethical behavior, white collar crime and identity theft, the roles of prison and punishment, and personal redemption. Thank you for being a part of our citywide book club.
